The National Atomic Museum is the nation's only congressionally-chartered museum of nuclear science and history. Through artifacts and audio-visual presentations, the museum tells the story of the nuclear age and the ongoing developments in nuclear science. The museum hosts displays presenting the development of nuclear weapons, including replicas of the world's first two atomic weapons, Little Boy and Fat Man, which were built and used at the end of World War II. The Museum's extensive outdoor exhibit includes a B-52 and B-29 aircraft, an F-105 jet, and numerous rockets and missiles.Plans are currently underway to build a new, larger National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque off of the Air Force base. This museum will be called the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. This state-of-the-art facility will allow the museum to expand its robotics and nuclear medicine exhibits and add new exhibits on pioneers of science, safety, food preservation, atomic time keeping, micro worlds, engineering, nuclear space, arms control and dismantlement, renewable energy, and more.
